Lanx Rolls Out New Spinal Plating System

Lanx, Inc., a privately held spinal device company, launched a new anterior thoracolumbar plating system that the company has dubbed “Epic.”

Announced during the 2011 annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in San Diego, Calif., the Epic system is an anterior fixation device for use in anterior thoracolumbar fusion procedures. The low-profile plate has been designed for versatility and simplified placement with a single-step cover plate to prevent screw back out and reduce surgical steps involved with traditional anterior plating procedures, according to company officials. The system includes lumbar and sacral plate options and is available in a wide range of sizes to accommodate different patient anatomies.

“The addition of the Epic System further broadens our product suite to include an anterior plating option,” said Dan Gladney, CEOfor Lanx. “It further reinforces Lanx’ commitment to offering surgeons technology that allows for simpler spine solutions and the flexibility to treat a growing, diversified patient population.”

Randal Trecha, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at Columbia Orthopaedic Group in Columbia, Mo., called Epic’s design “simple and intuitive.”

“The design provides application flexibilitywithout compromising construct strength and stability,” Trecha said. “Its streamlined insertion minimizes operative time.Thesingle-step cover plate assures implant integrity and provides the surgeon a confidently stabilized segment,”

Epic has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Broomfield, Colo.-based Lanx’s was founded in 2003.
